WHAT WE DO
Our Process
N-AbleTEK’s mission is to help Florida’s special needs children and adults enjoy the transformative power of technology. To achieve our goal, we follow a simple process:
- Identify a person in need – we work with adults and children with cognitive disabilities who cannot afford to purchase life-changing cognitive technology software. This includes individuals with developmental disabilities and veterans with traumatic brain injuries.
- Pair them with the right technology – our experts evaluate each candidate’s needs and pair them with the best support technology.
- Provide training and support – we make sure the individual can take advantage of all the technology’s features by providing the training and support they need.
- Monitor Their Progress -N-AbleTEK maintains an ongoing relationship with each technology user. This allows us to continually monitor their progress towards greater independence.
Did you know?
Assistive technology can enrich the lives of special needs children and adults in many ways. This includes helping with tasks like reading and writing documents, communicating with others, and searching for information online. Access to this technology helps these individuals independently handle a broader range of activities.
Unfortunately, for approximately 30 million Americans with cognitive disabilities, access to communication technologies is — or is perceived to be — out of reach. The majority of these people have limited or no access to communication technologies. They also haven’t received understandable information about how this technology can help improve their daily lives. (Source: Coleman Institute for Cognitive Disabilities)
N-AbleTEK wants to change these statistics for the better.
The Role of Cognitive-Focused Technology
The generally accepted definition of cognitive disabilities includes:
- Intellectual disability
- Developmental disability
- Traumatic brain injury
- Alzheimer’s Disease
- Stroke
- Serious, persistent mental illness
Without assistance, individuals suffering from these conditions often struggle with day-to-day tasks and suffer from a poor quality of life.
Cognitive-focused technology helps to strengthen an individual’s developmental, functional, and learning skills. It can also act as a substitute for abilities that a cognitively challenged person may not be able to develop on their own.
The State of the States in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Project is a comparative study of how money is spent on support and services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This study reinforces the need to “accelerate the development and utilization of assistive and cognitive technologies for people with IDD.”
Doing so will help support the ability of people with IDD to live safe, healthy, productive, and independent lives. Accelerating the use of this technology will also reduce the rapidly growing “cognitive digital divide” that is currently experienced by Americans with IDD.
